Production of biogas from renewable sources play a central role in the circular economy. Norway is committed to a 35-40 % reduction in carbon emissions from the transport sector by 2030 and is targeting to make the larger city areas essentially emission neutral. WAI contributes by making biogas production even more efficient.

Together with the University of Southeast Norway and Greve Biogass, WAI has received 4 MNOK in research grants from “Oslofjordfondet”. The objective is to develop new processes for significantly boosting biogas production in existing biogas plants, in order to increase the energy conversion rate of biogas from 30-50 % to 75 %.

The new solution will make biogas plants more environmentally sustainable, produce larger quantities of biochar that captures CO2, converts plastics to fuel and closes the circular economy gap.

The project is planned to be completed in 2022.
